So it would seem if one wants a good performing carb that flow in the 830 cfm. range one needs to buy a 950 hp. I didn't realize a 850 flows more than a 950 hp.

The 850 has a larger venturi than the 950HP but that doesn't mean that it flows more at a given depression. The 950HP body just like the 750HP and the 650HP is shaped differently on the top and does not have a choke horn. This helps the airflow a little bit over the 850 and the venturi being smaller has higher velocity than the one in the 850. This gives the HP carburetor more signal and better performance.

It doesn't. A typical 950HP flows about 850cfm.
