Is there a factory gear reduction starter available from a Ford that will fit this application, like maybe a later Ford Mustang, or a 460 car or truck?
If not, is there an aftermarket one that will fit.
My starter is about done, and the engine has about 12:1 compression and headers, so a smaller, stronger starter could be beneficial.
Thanks.

Not sure about a factory starter but have you looked at PowerMaster? That's what I have on my 11:1 Cleveland.

I use Summit Racing starters and have had great luck with them. The only one I've lost in 20 years has been one that circumstances broke an ear off the unit and no replacement nose could be located.

Rough guess at a part number

I also see where Powermaster has some less expensive OEM looking units. FWIW, the local rebuilder I use to keep things fresh has no love for Powermaster units.

I will check on those. Does it matter that mine is a 400 block, or is the starter fitment a function of the trans and bellhousing only?
Thanks.

Well the PowerHouse 9503 is the one I put on in 2013 new with the engine. Knock on wood, its still perfect. Keep a fresh battery and don't crank the engine for long periods of time and a starter is a starter for the most part. . I use to use a stock 5.0 302 starter on the 10.25:1 motor. Spun just fine. So mine in link below is for the 157 tooth. The 9504 is for 164 tooth.

when I searched for your 400 these are your options
