I would like to know what HP people have made with vacuum pumps. I would like to see some vacuum pump set ups/mounting for a Cleveland, pics. From research seems Star is the best. What others think about this topic.
Current build is 408 internal balance Cleveland, It has gas ported FT's and 3mm ring package. Just bought ATI 918920. Will post specs in build section...Tim

Hi Tim,

What are the rings rated for in lbs of tension?

Never used a Star, but the GZ Motorsports pumps are pretty nice.

Brent, not sure what tension, they are custom JE's how do I find out? The problem with GZ is that they are or used to be old Ford air pumps, that prob. is not the case now. Star is hands down the leader, but set up is $1300, when it comes to a couple hundred, alwats go quality for me.

Also Who makes quality mandrels other than Jones.

You can call JE and ask them about the rings. Or, you can put a rod/piston/rings in the bore and use a fish scale to see what it takes to pull one down the bore, just to get an idea. For high strung applications, I'll use a really low tension ring pack with a Napier 2nd. The Napier ring does a really good job of controlling oil.

If you can seal the motor up good, a vacuum pump will make a good bit of power for you and even more so with a dry sump system. Just watch about pulling excessive amounts of vacuum as it can suck the oil right off the wrist pins. I use teflon rear main seals and timing cover seals. They help to seal the engine up. If you use them, make sure they go on dry...

As for mandrels, I've worked with both Jones and Peterson. They both have real nice products. If you need any info, I'll help as much as I can.

This is a Jones mandrel, set up for a serpentine system. Believe it or not, this 427W went in a Daytona Coupe replica road racer....but has A/C. :)

20-40 hp isnt out of line to expect, alot depends on set-up, rings, piston design Etc.

Here's a test done by Moroso.

I fitted a 4 vane Moroso pump to my altered late last year.
I run with relief valve set at 10 -12 psi on wet sump 370ci.
I ran with approx 10-12lb, 1/8" oil rings, then swapped over to approx 8lb oil rings.
I suck from both covers and get a very small amount of methanol in the puke tank.
After all the work, my ET did not drop even the slightest.
I must be doing it wrong.

IMO methanol is a PITA and not worth the effort if your looking to go fast.

To hot lap bracket race, yes its worth it.... other than that the stuff is useless.

You may have ring seal issues? you running injection or carb?
